 Council Proposed Williamson Wetland

WRSAG as stakeholder have successfully to date stopped the council proposed wetland within Williamson Park. The objections that were successful are:

  • A wetland will permanently remove part of the park from its intended gift by the Williamson family as a place for the whole community to enjoy.

  • Beach popularity is growing yearly so this valuable land is a must keep for Beach events, carnivals and festivals, Beach Hop and parking when visitors swell.

  • A wetland does not work on sandy soil close to the beach

  • Wetland vegetation will become a dumping ground for rubbish and fire hazard in summer

  • The size of the existing pond is too small to even contemplate water improvements

  • The better option is to regularly clean the cesspits that are designed to collect rubbish

  • The Drybasin is a temporary means of handling the stormwater until the catchment is diverted away somewhere else and not discharging onto our pristine beach.

  • Wetlands are one of the largest contributors of methane gas

  • If a wetland was to be designed to improve water quality the size of it will need to be much larger to store rainwater for at least 2 days.
